A key event for networking in the NGV and clean energy
Given the clear satisfaction of AltFuels Iberia 2019 participants, the organization of the event has launched AltFuels Iberia 2020, taking place on 5-8 October 2020 at the IFEMA Trade Center, in Madrid, Spain.
Like 2019 version, AltFuels Iberia 2020 will be attended by companies and organizations from all over the world that will gather to analyze the present and future of natural gas and other alternative fuels throughout the peninsula, and to exhibit the latest in clean technologies for sustainable mobility.
The event will feature high-level conferences and exhibition of vehicles of all types, refueling stations, components, road and marine engines, as well as the entire value chain of the alternative fuels industry with the latest technological developments, multiple networking options, business and new advances.
AltFuels Iberia 2019, the first exhibition with natural gas-related vehicles and equipment, held in Spain since 2009, was a platform to show the many novelties of the gas and alternative energy industry and was aimed at professionals from around the world with the social and strategic purpose of advancing in the decarbonization of transport, as well as in the networking of the sector.
The exhibition, with free admission, was held in a 2,200m2 pavilion where 39 Spanish, Portuguese, European, American and Asian companies exhibited their vehicles and products. Below, you can see a summary of the event.
NATURAL GAS MOBILITY
Natural gas, a sustainable and economic fuel
Natural gas for vehicles is the most efficient, clean and sustainable fuel since it balances significant environmental advantages, through the reduction of emissions of both CO2 and pollutants and less noise pollution. Considering that the origin of environmental pollution comes mainly from transport, natural gas is the real alternative for vehicles, since it reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides by more than 85%, emissions of sulfur oxide by 100% and particles in suspension by almost 100%. In addition, gas engines produce up to 50% less noise than diesel engines.
In Spain, the vehicle fleet running on natural gas has almost tripled during the last 7 years, going from 2,900 units in 2010 to almost 8,500 in 2017, which represents an increase of almost 300%; while the car registrations experienced a rise that exceeds 2000% when climbing from 97 registrations in 2012 to 2,300 in 2017. On the other hand, there are 22 provinces that already offer natural gas supply at public stations, including Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Valencia. In the Iberian Peninsula there are 63 (53 in Spain and 10 in Portugal) natural gas stations open to the public and other 60 private facilities, according to the Spanish Gas Association (Sedigas). Due to its two variants, CNG and LNG, natural gas meets the demand of different types of transport, from passenger cars, urban public buses, vans and light distribution trucks to heavy long-distance trucks, without forgetting maritime and rail transport, achieving a significant reduction in both global and local emissions. In addition to its environmental advantages, natural gas is a very competitive fuel from the economic point of view, since it allows a saving of 30% per kilometer compared to diesel and 50% compared to a gasoline vehicle.
Circular economy and biofuels
On this transition to decarbonization, the concept of circular economy becomes more important and natural gas has its answer in biomethane. The use of this biofuel from renewable sources provides additional advantages for mobility decarbonization since supplying 20% of biomethane into the distribution system would reduce 36% of global emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) compared to petroleum-based fuels. The production of biomethane is a key value for the circular economy, as it provides a new and intelligent way to produce a clean and high quality fuel from local organic waste. Biomethane is a renewable fuel, low in carbon and available for the transport sector, both in the form of CNG and LNG. With this availability, the measured benefits of natural gas as a low carbon fuel are greatly expanded, resulting in a substantial reduction of all GHG emissions.
On the other hand, hydrogen is also a relevant energy actor in the region, being a renewable and clean fuel because its sole tailpipe emission is water vapor. Spain has six hydrogen refueling stations, located in Albacete, Huesca, Zaragoza, Puertollano and two in Seville. However, it is expected to reach 20 stations by 2020 to facilitate the expansion of vehicles powered by technology. Recent efforts translate into more than 200 R+D+i projects, more than 80 companies involved in the sector, more than 40 research centers, universities and public research organizations and more than 500 million euros in research projects.
NGV fleet and infrastructure
The natural gas vehicle (NGV) fleet grew by 26% during the first half of 2019, with 3,716 more units, totaling a fleet of 17,932 vehicles, according to data from GASNAM (Iberian Association of Natural Gas for Mobility). This represents a growth of more than 62% over the previous year in the freight and passenger transport sector.
The vehicles that use this fuel obtain the ECO label of the Spanish General Directorate of Traffic, which allows them to benefit from free circulation in the city center during periods of access restrictions due to episodes of high pollution, tax incentives and bonuses in areas of regulated parking, among other advantages.
On the other hand, the natural gas refueling network continues to grow in Spain and the new map of refueling facilities will allow to meet the future increase in demand and strengthen the availability of this fuel in the market, given the momentum that NGVs are gaining. There are currently 187 natural gas stations open and underway in Spain (111 of CNG and 76 of LNG) and 30 in Portugal (17 of CNG and 13 of LNG).
